Peter Miles

ART DIRECTOR

An elite name in graphic design and art direction, Peter Miles exists in a world where the subtleties of spacing, fonts, size and cropping can mean the difference between a powerful brand identity and an also-ran. Clients such as Marc Jacobs, Céline, Phillips de Pury, Juergen Teller, Mario Testino, Sofia Coppola and Steidl have all utilized his brilliant mind to enhance their branding and electrify their marketing projects with his restrained elegance and craftsmanship.

A graduate of the Royal College of Art, he was a co-founder of the design firm, Fuel, based in London in the early 90’s. It was during this time that Peter and his partners helped to redefine graphic design around the world by deconstructing the opulence that was pervasive in the design world at that time. Fuel embraced the idea that less was more and grew to become a global powerhouse in design. In 2004, Peter decided that New York should be his next step and so separated from Fuel to begin a brand new experience. Never one to sit idle, Peter quickly developed relationships with many of New York’s leading names in fashion and art. These relationships blossomed into collaborations that have helped to reshape how many consumers perceive value in brands by utilizing Peter’s eye for minimalism to maximize brand identity and impact for everything from art books and movie titles to fashion advertising campaigns and auction house catalogues.

Noted design historian, Emily King, has stated about Peter: “Peter has an editor’s sensibility, he pares things down and cleans them up. The Marc Jacobs ads appear like neatly shaped installments in a long-running, almost Dickensian tale. The presentation and framing are all about restraint, but the overall project is about anything but.”

Peter Miles has just recently collaborated with the American Artist, Matthew Bakkom to publish, “New York City: Museum of Complaint” through the new imprint, Steidl-Miles, a division of the German art books publisher. In addition, Peter continues to develop the identity for Céline with creative director, Phoebe Philo and the Marc Jacobs brand with designer Marc Jacobs as well as his numerous projects with famed photographer Juergen Teller.
